University of Bayreuth BIGSAS Scholarships 2025 for African Women Scholars
The Bayreuth International Graduate School for African Studies (BIGSAS) at the University of Bayreuth in Germany is offering an exceptional opportunity for African women scholars to join its prestigious research community.
Through the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), BIGSAS aims to support early-career scholars in African Studies by providing them with the resources and academic network to advance their research and contribute to the field of African Studies.
About BIGSAS
BIGSAS is part of the University of Bayreuth’s broader commitment to African Studies.
It hosts a diverse community of scholars focused on interdisciplinary research across Africa’s historical, social, cultural, and political landscapes.
By joining BIGSAS, scholars become part of an international academic network that fosters exchange, collaborative research, and a multidisciplinary approach to understanding Africa’s complexities.
BIGSAS is a graduate school which offers a well organised framework, close mentorship and wide expertise to successfully pursue a doctorate in the field of African studies.
BIGSAS does not comprise any kind of regular funding; it is not a scholarship. Whether BIGSAS fits your research plans, depends on the research project you would like to pursue.
BIGSAS has been awarded two scholarships within the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for which BIGSAS will nominate candidates who have successfully passed the application procedure.
BIGSAS provides a centre for creative and innovative PhD training based on the inter- and multi-disciplinary research environment of the Institute of African Studies, IAS, at the University of Bayreuth, and the Cluster of Excellence ‘Africa Multiple: Reconfiguring African Studies’.
